Boccia

About

Boccia is a game of precision. The objective of the game is to throw leather balls as close as possible to a white target ball, referred to as the ‘jack’. At the conclusion of the game, the player closest to the ‘jack’ receives 1 point for each ball closer to the ‘jack’ then their opponent.

Boccia is played on an indoor court and the field of play is narrow and long. The common playing area has a designated target area where all scoring occurs. Individual player boxes are equal in size and players must remain completely in the box during play.

The individual player box is where the athlete makes his or her throw. Men and women compete together in three disciplines: individual, pair and team competition. Each competitor plays six balls in an individual event, three balls in a pairs event and two balls in a team event.

Competitors:
Athletes with cerebral palsy, traumatic brain injury, stroke or similar non-progressive conditions compete in this sport. Players compete while seated in (wheel)chairs and some participants are permitted to use assistive devices, such as ramps or chutes, to aid in propelling the ball.
